History of the
Wake Family
In 1865 the Wake Brothers, Jesse, Edwin, Mark & Laban
immigrated to Australia settling at Kangaroo Flat just north
of Adelaide.
Edwin first came to Eyre Peninsular in early 1882 and settled
at Elbow Hill where he and his wife Caroline raised 14 of
their 16 children that survived in “Wakeleigh Homestead”.
They had, as Frank Masters in his book 'The Saga of Wangaraleeddie' wrote ‘Had eight stalwart sons' and in 1905
they had twelve hundred acres under wheat, possibly one of the
largest areas for one family in the district.
Now the descendants of these brothers are farming all over Eyre
Peninsular.
It is the network of farms at Darke Peak (Bushman’s Hut),
Cummins (Whurra Mundi Homestead), Buckleboo (Rockview
Homestead) and Seaside Rests (Coastal Dreaming at Ceduna and
Smoky Bay Seaside Cottage) that has inspired
Mike and Tessa Wake to share these with all folk through
www.australianhomesteads.com
Fly/drive to Ceduna, Port Lincoln or Whyalla and take in as
many of these homestead experiences as you have time for.
